FRANKFORT, Ky. — A respected GOP leader and longtime adviser to U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell signed on Tuesday as chairman of Republican Todd P’Pool’s campaign for attorney general in Kentucky.

Larry Cox, who retired as McConnell’s state director last year after some 26 years, said in a statement released by the campaign that P’Pool is the clear choice for the job.

P’Pool, a Madisonville lawyer who has been elected twice as Hopkins County attorney, is the only Republican in the attorney general’s race so far, though former Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Lambert has said he is considering a run.

P’Pool, 37, is promising to fight to protect Kentucky’s coal and agricultural industries from what he considers burdensome regulations imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. If elected, he said he also would join attorneys

general from other states in trying to stop federal health care reforms and that he would lead a crackdown on illegal drugs in the state.

In a statement, P’Pool said he is honored to have Cox involved in the campaign, saying his political experience will be “an asset to our team.”

McConnell said last year that Cox has been his most trusted adviser and friend since he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Cox said he has known P’Pool for more than 15 years.

“I am convinced he is the clear choice in this race,” Cox said of P’Pool.

“It is time for the commonwealth to have the benefit of Todd’s independent, principled and energetic leadership,” Cox said in a statement released by the campaign. “I look forward to working with the campaign, and traveling across Kentucky informing voters of the clear choice they have in Todd P’Pool.”

P’POOL CAMPAIGN FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL SHOWS FINANCIAL MUSCLE and MOMENTUM for 2011

Madisonville, KY- Hopkins County Prosecutor, Todd P’Pool (R), announced not even three weeks ago for the office of Attorney General yet his campaign has already found early success across the Commonwealth. “The political climate in our state is still electric as people are looking for new leaders who can restore common sense conservatism to government. I’m honored to have received financial backing from each of the six congressional districts in Kentucky and I am excited by how eager people are to stand with our campaign,” P’Pool said.

“I entered this race with no delusions. It will not be cheap or easy. For this reason, I am making a personal investment of $250,000 to the campaign. I feel confident we will exceed our financial goals, run an effective campaign and give the people of Kentucky a real advocate for their values and rights,” P’Pool stated.

Not even three weeks ago, P’Pool filed the necessary paperwork to become a candidate. In that time he has met with conservative leaders across the state and began assembling a veteran finance team. “The status quo cannot and will not meet Kentucky’s challenges. That is why I am running for Attorney General,” P’Pool continued, “My wife and I have three daughters so I am heavily invested in improving the safety and future of our state.”

Since filing mid-December Todd P’Pool for Attorney General has acquired just over $270,000 in contributions and will be the number reflected on the quarterly report. This total reflects the Hopkins County Prosecutor’s personal investment as well as personal contributions from friends and supporters representing all six of Kentucky’s congressional districts.
